BACHELDER Wismer-Parke Vineyard’ 2014, 20 Mile Bench,
Niagara, Ontario, Canada
This is our first-released single-vineyard from the Wismer-Parke vineyard: it
has taken us a few years to make sure we are really getting it right: hearing
what the vineyard has to tell us about its soils and aspect through the
medium of Pinot Noir. Now older vines, planted in 1999 to 115 and 667 on
3309 rootstalk on silty/clay and limestone soil, our Wismer-Parke Pint Noir
shows the classic Vineland (as distinct from Jordan) combination of plush
richness, tight minerality, and the wild, ‘bloody’ iron-grip of red soils. At
once a hedonistic, ageable and yet perfumed Pinot Noir, Wismer-Parke’s
vocation would seem to be one of a certain firm, wild prettiness, finishing
with a long, slately minerality. Planted just south of Highway 8 on the Bench,
on a well-drained slope on the east side of Victoria Street in Vineland, the
Wismer-Parke site is arguably one of Niagara’s ‘Grand Crus’ for Pinot Noir.
This small-lot wine was fermented with indigenous yeast and handled
gently; patiently aged for 18 months (25% new French oak, the rest 1-5 years
old) in our cool Beamsville cellar before bottling. It is then aged for at least
another 8 months in bottle to allow its nuanced floral bouquet to develop.
The Wismer Vineyard: Now into the second generation, The Wismer family
has been growing grapes on the Vineland Bench for 20+ years.
