José Ignacio Cuenca, often described as a Renaissance man and passionate connoisseur of food and wine, began his winemaking journey in 2008, inspired by the birth of his only son, Mateo. To honor him, José set out to create a Californian Pinot Noir bearing Mateo’s name—a personal and heartfelt tribute. In 2017, an 8-year-old Mateo was selected to introduce the song “Barquito de papel” during the 135th anniversary celebration of UCLA Lab School, where he was a student. This unique private-label wine, crafted by the renowned La Rioja Alta, reflects José’s dedication to both family and the artistry of winemaking.
Winemaker tasting notes: Clean and bright, with an elegant ruby colour, medium-high intensity and garnet rim. The nose is intense and fragrant and reveals a complex array of balsam notes, brioche, toasted bread, vanilla, toffee and cinnamon as well as fine aromas of black plums, wild strawberries, ripe blackcurrants and red berries, creating a fruity and balsamic bouquet. On the palate, the wine is well structured and balanced, with a pleasant freshness and smooth, polished tannins, thanks to its careful ageing in oak barrels. The finish is fresh and delicate, with a lingering aftertaste.
